[Gmail-Users] "Not Read" Label???

There is a label with the others along the left side of my screen named
"Not Read", I believe it must have come with my original Gmail set-up as I
don't recall putting it there. The label is always empty regardless of how
many unread emails I may have. How do I get this to work??? I have
always wanted to see all of my unread emails together, especially on my
cell phone. This is import because sometimes I will change the flag back
to unread after reading it so I can refer to it later. Sometimes that
unread email drops so far down this list it is hard to find. How can I
setup this label to show my unread emails???

Thanks in advance... Bob

"Not Read" is not a built-in label. The built in label is "unread"... you
can search for is:unread, or label:unread to get all the unread messages.

The system label "unread" is a hidden label. You will not see it in any
list of labels, as far as I know. I never have seen it listed, not even
under System Labels in the master list of all your labels (gear icon ->
Settings -> Labels).

Labels themselves do not "do" anything. They can be attached to messages,
but you need to do that (aside from the built-in system labels). You can
do that either manually, or using a Filter that you create. The name of a
label is relatively unimportant; it should mean something to you, but it
has no meaning to Gmail.

The Unread label situation is very confusing to me.

When I first got this Gmail account, it came with an Unread system label.
It was listed along with other system labels like Trash and All Mail. I
created this account probably within weeks of Gmail's introduction.

Later on when I acquired other accounts, I noticed they didn't come with an
Unread system label anymore. I looked back at this account again and
noticed my Unread label was still listed but it had become a user label
rather than a system label. However, it still functions to display all
unread conversations without the aid of any filters or searches. When I
click on the label it displays "label:unread" in the search field.

I just now tried creating an Unread label in one of my newer accounts and
got the message "Sorry, you can't create a label named "unread" (it's a
reserved system label)." So I guess it's still considered a system label
even though it's not one you can choose to display in the settings.

So it appears that the name is reserved as an alleged system label even
though it's not accessible to most users. I guess users can just create a
quick link for "is:unread" but why not allow the label to be displayed
along with the other system labels like Gmail did briefly when they started
out. I guess I'm lucky to have it at all though it's a mystery to me why
this reserved system label is now listed along with my user labels.

That's interesting.

Another thing worth noting, is that the Gmail commands "is:", "in:", and
"label:" are roughly equivalent to one another. You can look for messages
in one of your user labels by using any of these words. Likewise, you can
substitute the word "label:" in the other Gmail search terms that normally
take "is:" or "in:". (I don't know if this always works, but so far it
has.)

It works for the shortcut/abbreviations too. "L:" is an abbreviation for
"label:" but also works for "is:" or "in:".
